The objective of this contribution was to investigate the effects of publication language, topic, open access option, impact factor and others on citation frequency of the author's articles in Erwerbs-Obstbau since such citation metrics became available, i.e. ca.2000 citations were extracted from google scholar, reads' from ResearchGate and downloads from the publisher Springer. Articles in German were read, downloaded and cited as often as those in English; articles on trendy topics (carbon footprint, climate change) were popular over ashort period, but not cited more often in the long-term. An article in German on Recent climate change effects on pome fruit phenology' achieved the greatest citation frequency with 32citations without open access option.Articles in Erwerbs-Obstbau with the purchased open access option were downloaded and read 30times more often, but without increasing the number of their citations. Overall, the novelty of the contents and information contained in apaper determined its citation with publication language, impact factor of the journal and open access playing minor roles. The majority of citations in international journals require abstracts transmitting results rather than descriptions of what has been investigated.Apart from citations as one measure of quality or high standard of the work, novelty and visibility, another category of publications in Erwerbs-Obstbau emerged, characterized by afair number of reads, but very few citations; this initially apparent discrepancy was interpreted as papers read with interest to update the readers knowledge on aparticular topic.An article can be made more visible in the scientific world by (a)posting the title page, graphics or relevant photo (colour supplement) in social media such as facebook, add resources' in ResearchGate, google scholar or explain' on academia. ResearchGate (suggested for you') and academia (personalised suggestion') recommend articles to colleagues; with ResearchGate, readers can recommend' articles.
