| 英文摘要 | Objective: To analyze how the Scientific Exploration Commission formed by the monarchical government of Brazil between 1859 and 1861 mobilized the climate issue in its work in the then northern provinces of the country and how this resulted in clashes with people from those semi-arid territories. Methodology: In the light of the field of Environmental History and Science, the research is based on the analysis of sources from the aforementioned commission of scientists, as well as discussions about the climate by people from those provinces. Originality: The climate issue sometimes still appears as a topic of minor importance both for the so-called Scientific Commission th and in the dynamics of that territory and its people in the mid 19 century. This article questions this view by showing how, above all, interactions with rainfall and its scarcity were decisive in the relations of this part of Brazil with the monarchical power at that time. Conclusions: The semi-arid territory was a challenge to the country's integration project due to its distance both in biogeographical terms and its people in relation to the ideal of nation gestated in the center of imperial power, in Rio de Janeiro. The purpose of the Scientific Commission was to bring the imperial order to these zones of the Empire, and ought to approach, scientifically, to this extent, the climatic issue. However, since these were not issues that the court monopolized, it resulted in several clashes with other projects focused on this part of Brazil. |
