| 英文摘要 | Zooxanthellae densities in two coral species were assessed in Lakshadweep reefs to learn how depth, seasons and temperature fluctuations influence their densities. The species, Porites lutea and Pocillopora meandrina were sampled at two stations at the outer slope (5 and 10 m depths) in two atolls (Kavaratti and Kadmat) from 2018 to 2022. The results showed significant variance in zooxanthellae densities between both coral species across different islands, depths, and seasons, with higher densities for Porites lutea (mean 5.42 x 105 cells per cm2) than Pocillopora meandrina (mean 4.87 x 105 cells per cm2). In both the species studied, the densities were higher at 5 m depth than at 10 m, with a 14% difference in densities in Pocillopora meandrina and a more substantial 20.56% difference in Porites lutea. In both the depths, the highest densities were observed in the post -monsoon of all the sampling years, from 4.44 to 13.66 x 105 cells per cm2 and from 5.25 to 10.46 x 105 cells per cm2, respectively, for Porites lutea and Pocillopora meandrina. The densities correlated significantly with the temperature and Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) values at 5 m for both the species and the seasons sampled. These findings show variations in temperature and irradiance influencing zooxanthellae densities, emphasising the significance of this information in understanding bleaching resilience. |
