英文摘要 | In many fast developing countries, compact development is considered an important approach to halt urban expansion. While the benefits of compact development have been confirmed by many empirical studies, the warming effects that compact development causes in the context of climate change have not yet been well identified. This study integrates a simulation model of urban development and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to simulate the impacts of different urban forms in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) of China under the projected climate change. The results indicate that in the urban area of the GBA, climate change will increase the mean summer air temperature by 1.77 degrees C and 1.82 degrees C in the daytime and nighttime, respectively, by 2050s. Furthermore, urban development will induce additional warming by 0.32-0.36 degrees C in the daytime and 0.38-0.46 degrees C in the nighttime. Compact development will cause greater warming than sprawling development in both the daytime and the nighttime, by 0.05 degrees C and 0.08 degrees C, respectively. Such results reveal that although compact urban form can conserve more land, the cost indeed is the greater warming effects caused by highdensity development. Therefore, the trade-off between land conservation and warming mitigation must be considered, because the warming induced by climate change and urban development will exert important impacts on both human health and the power system. |
