英文摘要 | EMBRACE aims to develop resilience through addressing challenges and finding solutions to socio-ecological problems faced by urban, peri-urban, and rural communities that depend on coastal ecosystems in South Africa. This resilience is essential for achieving key development targets in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and targets SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation), 11 (sustainable cities and communities), and 13 (climate action). EMBRACE outputs will support sustainable development in the face of significant challenges posed by climate change (UN SDGs 11, 13), including sea-level rise, changing temperature, and fluctuations in precipitation, as well as cumulative effects brought about by global change vectors such as increasing pollution and resource over-exploitation. EMBRACE unites researchers and stakeholders to consider how best to unify natural science findings with policy science insights in light of contextual specifics in various settings. We propose a network that joins communities that live near or depend on coastal habitats (UN SDG 6) with socio-ecological researchers that can translate environmental science findings into accessible tools. Climate resilience is essential for communities and ecosystems that will be forced to deal with the slow onset disaster of climate change. EMBRACE will improve climate risk characterisation, identify network-held risk associated with climate events, and enhance understanding and policy development in South Africa, where multiple decision-makers act on intersecting risks. This project addresses all three GCRF-ESRC Climate Resilience themes by: (1) identifying system behaviours and responses around climate resilience in coastal habitats; (2) assessing how to improve institutional capacity for decision-making in current legislation for future resilience; and (3) improving the ability to manage complexity in disaster response and recovery by making recommendations based on case study research. |
