英文摘要	The discussion around the sustainability of biomass and bioenergy use has begun in the previous decade in 2007 when the food versus energy debate was started due to the concurrent significant increase in energy and food prices. The researchers initially aimed to answer questions related to the carbon neutrality of biomass as a result of direct and indirect land use change, the N2 O emissions derived from energy crop cultivations and agricultural crops as well as change of carbon stocks. This chapter presents the main considerations concerning the sustainability of the solid biofuels production process. The main environmental, social, and economic aspects related to solid biofuels production are presented and analyzed. The chapter also refers to the European biomass sustainability policy, as well as to the existing sustainability certification schemes for solid biofuels. Sustainability aspects of energy crops and forest management are also presented and discussed. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.
