英文摘要 | Snow cover, permafrost, and seasonal ground ice are all key components of the terrestrial cryosphere, or that part of the Earth’s surface that is seasonally or perennially frozen. Recent warming in high-latitude regions has resulted in shortened snow cover duration, warming and thawing of permafrost, and earlier thaw of seasonal ground ice. These changes are a departure from previously observed dynamics and are expected to continue under future warming. Detecting biogeophysical responses to warming requires data to be collected over many years at many locations, while models can help us predict future dynamics in snow, permafrost, and ground ice. Changes in any of these components have far-reaching implications for hydrological and biogeochemical cycles. © Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2014. |
